Subject: Working Boerboel Association

The historical temperament of the Boerboel was renowned as being a stable family and farm dog that was sufficiently controlled in nature to be safe and stable in behaviour around farm workers, tradesmen and other invited visitors to the home but which had sufficient power and character to protect its family and property if circumstances required it. At our Board meetings this year, EBBASA considered the increasing amount of anecdotal evidence that we are threatened with a decline both in the basic temperament of the Boerboel around the World and a consequent loss of its working qualities. EBBASA resolved to form an EBBASA Working Boerboel Association which would be established to operate in each region or country in which EBBASA was represented. The objective of the Association is to protect the historical temperament of the Boerboel to which not enough attention is being given and to preserve its working qualities into the future. It will operate on as global a basis as possible. Recognising the importance of this task, EBBASA understood that preparing for the launch of this Association would take some time if it was to be truly effective and professional in its endeavours and it was agreed that a discussion paper was to be prepared which would outline a vision for the development of the Association, temperament testing of all dogs and the establishment of working titles and tests, appropriate to the Boerboel. This paper is to be circulated to a group of experts around the World who have significant experience of working with Boerboels who will be invited to comment on the paper and to assist EBBASA to develop and implement the activities of the Association in order to achieve its objectives. This process has now commenced. In the light of the current ongoing discussions that have recently taken place on various internet discussion fora around the world concerning the temperament and working abilities of the Boerboel, it has been decided to announce the establishment of the EBBASA Working Boerboel Assocaition now so that people are aware that there will be a serious professional initiative launched in this area which will be available in the near future and to which some may wish to contribute their efforts or to partake in its activities. As in all EBBASA activities, the breed comes first, and the Association will be open to anybody, irrespective of their current affiliations. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Association, partaking in its activities or assisting with its development, feel free to contact me at jamesbrennan@coomore.com This will also have the benefit of providing us with feedback and an indication of the extent of interest in the Working Boerboel.
