Jenny,
Lest you think I have been sitting on the sidelines moaning, too lazy or dis-interested to get involved and do something positive...

Nearly a decade ago Mr. John Blackwell, Mr. John Penders, and me'self started a working and testing venue for Boerboels (the North American Boerboel Club). We had events drawing a good crowd, lots of Boerboels, the ATTS, CGC, Historical Boerboel club of RSA, and guest speakers for the then new PenHIPP procedure. We operated a not-for-profit club with simple tests for agility, temperament, and willingness to protect. All test were pass/fail...no in between, no scores, no top dog, no purple ribbon...you either had a good Boerboel that could do his stuff in public or you didn't, period. We had no registry affiliation, we would test any Boerboel.

We always had a good turn out, especially considering at that time almost know one here had heard of a Boerboel. We never lacked for public interest, we never lacked for members, we had contributions and offers for help...what we learned was this; People will show up, they will bring their dogs, but by and large, most will not allow their dog to be tested in public, most would not give their dog the chance fearing failure and humiliation. WHY? We learned this; Many Boerboel owners wanted to become Boerboel breeders and as our club prescribed a passing grade in all areas as minimum breeding criteria...failure on testing was public notice that your dog was not breeding quality. That is simply not what most breeders wanted to chance.

We still test dogs, we still fail dogs, we just no longer expect the general dog-owning public to adhere to the harsh standards that a few of us cling to.

David
