Subject: Now, how I would do it
In reply to: Lee 's message, "Re: Bandogs-Swinfords-Outcross breedings..." on 16:31:32 11/17/09 Tue

IF I was to add boerboel blood into my program, here is how I would do it.

1. I would select a boerboel that has a trait and comes from a line of dogs that also is known to produce this trait that I would like to see more present in my line, while at the same time ALSO selecting a boerboel that can do what it is that I want done. Lets say I want to add size to my dogs. Now, let's recall...the purpose of the Swinford (Bandog) is to be a family companion guardian. I would select a boerboel that has good size, but one that also can do reasonably well at protection work and is stable with the family...and try to find a specimen that can do this while also coming from a line of dogs that can produce such. By selecting the right dog, I don't have to worry about undesired dominant traits. It is the hidden traits that we need to watch out for. I will come back to this later, but let's call this outcrossed dog, "OUTCROSS"

2. Then I would pair that dog to an excellent specimen within my program that is worth building on. Say this dog's name is "My line."

3. I would keep most of the litter for personal evaluation by either keeping all dog offspring myself or with trustworthy friends that will allow me to "make the call" as needed. I would cull dogs from the program that don't meet my expectations. This can be done by spay or neuter. I would choose the best one or two that remains (if there are some good ones left) that also display the trait I am looking to add to my line. Let's call this dog "F1." By culling this litter good, I have eliminated some of the undesired traits that may have surfaced that are carried in "My Line" and in "OUTCROSS."

4. I would then take F1 back to "My Line" (or a littermate of "My Line") to reduce the influence of "OUTCROSS" in order to reduce the possibility of the "negative effects" that can come in from an unknown program (reducing the chance of undesired traits). I would then select a dog from this breeding (let's name it "F2" that is 75% like "My Line" but is still expressing the desired trait from "Outcross." If the desired trait is still present in a working class dog, I select for it and have what I wanted while also reducing risk of recessive undesired genes that may have been carried in "OUTCROSS." Although I haven't elimated the risk of undesired traits sneeking in, I have greatly reduced the chance of such by reducing the contribution of "OUTCROSS'S."

5. I would use this F2 dog in my program as I wished but I wouldn't line breed on the dog (meaning I would try to avoid have this dog in any pedigree on both top and bottom up close)...and just continue to cull every generation as I have always done by selecting on performance.

This should prevent problems while at the same time offering a good probability of improving on the desired trait.
