The Whaley House and the Queen Mary are supposed to be very haunted. Also, Alcatraz in San Fran, the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, and the U.S.S. Hornet, which I think is docked in San Diego. California seems to have many ghosts, and you shouldn't have any problem finding reading material about them.
