Subject: You Keep a knockin' but you cant come in!

I just found this site today and Ive had "experiences" in the house Im currently living in and I was hoping I could get some feedback on this.
I bought a house about 8 months ago. Me and my then girlfriend decided to move into the house while we were remodeling it. Not wanting to move a bunch of stuff in we jsut occupied one bedroom in the house. From the beginning I heard doors opening and footsteps up and down the hall at night. I work a weird shift so Im normally up through the night. I never told my girlfriend what I heard I always made up and excuse to get out of bed and go look. One morning about 3am I was coming out of the shower and heard the sound of someone stepping away from the bathroom door. I grabbed the nearest thing I could and swung the door open only to find no one there. As I was walking into the bedroom I caught a glimpse of someone or somethig standing just inside the doorway of a spare bedroom,so real that I swung thinking it was someone there, well nothing. I went on into the bedroom, locking the door behind me. Well my girlfriend woke up when I got in the room and we sat there talking like we always did, never did I mention what had just happened, and as we sat there I heard the whole door opening footsteps thing start up, and then she looked at me and says, There it goes again. Playing dumb I asked her what she was tlaking about and she proceeded to tell me that the bedroom door across the hall opened by itself and then she would hear footsteps going from one bedroom to another and then up the hall, then back down again in a few minutes, and that the funny thing was that the bedroom door was always opened. I said no the funny thing is there is no bedroom door. I took it off the hinges when we moved into the house because it was busted.Well we talk more about it and she then tells me that her and the neighbor did see something in the house, a white shadowy figure standing in front of the bathroom! I never mentioned to her what had happened right before I got in the room. SHe went on to tell me that it usually started about 7 in the evening and she'd heard it through the night til about 10 in the morning. There was never a pattern it just happened at different times. That it seemed to go from one room to the other and then up the hall never messing with our room. I told her thats because it knew better than to mess with me. BAD MISTAKE! very bad mistake indeed. We kinda laughed about it and then turned out the lights to go to bed and not but a few minutes later the bedroom door started shaking, violently like someone was trying to rip it off the hinges. We jumped up and turned on the lights and she asks if Im gonna go and see what it was. I said well no, you know exactly what it was and if it couldnt get in the first time it was gonna get in the second time. That she was a police officer so she was better at situation like that anyway so if she wanted to go look, have at it. Well she did and she found nothing of course. Well that was enough for me. After that she had said that she had contactwith ghosts before nad it didnt bother her, I said I didnt like it so the next evening she went into the room it seemed to originate from and asked it to leave. Things calmed down after that but the footsteps were still heard every now and again, I catch glimpses of movement out of the corner of my eye, and I never made another smart alec comment about it either, lol.
Well now days I still hear things knockin around at night, usually in the kitchen area, every now and again I get the feeling that someone is watching me though Im the only one in the house now and Ive heard doors opening but in another part of the house now. My questions are this.
Can supernatural or ghostly experiences happen at certain times? Ive noticed between 2 and 4 am seem to be the worse.
Can the "ghost" actually be just be "Ghost sounds"? meaning I hear doors opening and closing but they never actually open and close.
Why would it move from the back of the house to the front of the house?
Does anyone have any idea what exactly "it" is and if theres anyway I can find out for myself what "it" without the use of seances or ouija boards, my girlfriend wanted to bring one into the house but I refused.
And last but not least. I found "witchcraft" books in the house when I moved in and noticed that almost every one of the "spells" that were highlighted in the book had to do with "protection against evil spirits". Could this have anything to do with it?
any feedback would be apreciated. Im a littel un nerved about it all, but its not gonna run me out of my home.
