Hello, I read your story and it does sound like you may have a ghost. I think the foot steps tell alot and the doors. If your looking for burglers or some one in the house and find nothing, that is a big clue. You also mentioned witch craft books in the home, My mother rented a house one time with satanic writing on the wall the owners tryed to cover it w/paint it still showed through, The house was very haunted Things in the kitchen would rattle late at night many things would happen. When a ghost is arround the area it is very cold, most of the time you see them out of the corners of your eyes and they like to come out in the late hours but some in the day. Im no expert i'v delt with them many years, Tell them to go away and leave you alone or we hang a cross in the room they bother us in.
