Subject: My reflection

About the first part of the project (MP3 for the elderly)

Li Zheng

I think our group is doing quite well. I’m happy to see that we work well together. What we have done now is mostly interviews and analysis of the results. I found that interviews were not as simple as I thought. First, it was not just finding an elderly person and asking a few questions, but finding the right person and asking the right questions. I talked to several candidates before I could find a proper person to interview, because this person should not only be an elderly, but also an elderly who listens to music and surfs the web. It turns out that it is hard to find such a person over 70 years old, so I finally interviewed a 55-year-old man. Second, the questions to ask, and the way to ask them, are vital in getting the information we want. For example, when I asked my subject what additional features he would like for a portable music device, he couldn’t think of any because he did not have one. However, when I provided a list of features to choose from, he quickly decided what he wanted and what he did not. Finally, sometimes I have to use information sources other than interviews. For example, a problem I got is that we have music provider as one of our stakeholders, but we could not find any to interview. So I just visited some music providing web sites, and tried to figure out how they worked and what their needs might be like.
