the bakersfield blitz came to the san diego sports arena with a bitter taste in their mouths from the august 3rd playoff loss to the tide and revenge in their minds. what they quickly found was a tsunami buzzsaw that struck quickly. the tide showed a spirit that i witnessed thru spring training and carried over to week 1. with new weapon jesus reyes and returning threats marty graham, rico curtis and jerry garrett, bakersfield could not recover from a quick 16 deficit. A multiple touchdown game from marty graham and jesus reyes, combined with a balanced running game with rico curtis, and a stalwart stronger offensive line gave kane claunch plenty of time to pass to his weapons. The defense played a great game, harrassing bakersfield qb chad elliot, and got the seasons first safety early first quarter. over all a great team effort, bakersfield had a few spurts to try to get back in, to no avail. with more size, speed and depth this year on the tide, they are one of the teams to watch for 2003.
