Modified Bitumen is popular here(st pete) on low slope roofs and actually will last longer as you can coat them as they age to increase the life. 20yrs seems to be popular age to tear off when left au-natural. All asphalt based roofs are big energy wasters.
Our local inspectors will not accept standard shingles if your roof doesn't have enough pitch.

An alternative you may want to ask about is using white EPDM. Much higher emittance & reflectivity and longer life. Florida Solar Energy Center - Rooff emittance/reflectives ! Important considerations for your monthly power bills.
