What type of metal? That makes a big difference. How thick is it? Is it standing seam or some of the panel applications that come in smaller pieces? Does the product have exposed or concealed fasteners? Does the roof system require batting? Is the roof deck skip sheeted now?

Maybe you will have to tear off and maybe not. I have no idea of what you are doing considering there are over 200 different metal roof systems out there. Have you looked at some of the architectural metals in the photo gallery. I have installed those right over existing cedar shake roofs. I need more input on your project. Tell me at least who the manufacturer of your product is and what they call it.
