Subject: What is a Roof Jack, and what purpose do they server?

I've just recently moved into a pre-exisiting home. Before we moved in we had a Home Inspector check the dwelling for any obvious (and not so obvious defects). In his inspection report he noted that some basic maintenance should be done on the roof where there were most likely Roof Jacks installed.

I was told by a local roofing company that the small circular marks towards the bottom of the roof were in fact hail strikes. This was quite disheartening.

I've since looked at the roof, and the so called "hail strikes" are in a very symetrial pattern along the lower edge of the roof, at equal spacing. They look very man-made.

So, this leads me back to my intitial question...what is a Roof Jack, and what are they for?

I guess that you must have a roof with a significant pitch to it if it had roof jacks installed during they installation. These are metal brackets that are installed on the roof to hold a 2x6 for scaffolding. These jacks are fastened through the roof deck into the rafter then removed after the installation. The roofers are suppose to take care not to let them mar the roofing product during their use.

Therefore, in order for these marks to be caused by these roof jacks they would have to be above the roof deck where a rafter is.
