Maybe I see the point of all this differently from you then. It seems to me that the point of debating here is to try to see which view of a debate is correct. They only way to do this is to state your view, and see if it can withstand close analysis (and yes, being picked at). Often that means trying to show why your oponents point of view is wrong by breaking down his argument into discrete points, and showing why they don't work. As an example, say the debate is Nebula vrs Dreadnought, it is impossible to try to cover everything in one point. Therefore you break it down, and try to show why one is superior in say firepower or speed. When I do that, I always supply episode or film references, and try to avoid conjecture (check the archives and you will see that is so). If I do use conjecture, I try to make it clear what it is, and to conceed that there is little or no evidence to support it. I therefore do get irritated when a person keeps saying I provide no evidence. Check the archives for those cases too if you wish. I try not to insult people, though at times I have (hey, I'm only human). If I do, I try to apologise for my lapse afterwards. Ask Capn Hayes (or check the archives), and he will tell you that is the case. I generally don't attack the person, just their views. I don't have a problem if people disagree and attack my arguments, as long as they provide proof for their arguments and not just 'beliefs'. If I am wrong, I will admit it (again, check the archives and you will see that is the case). Beliefs are fine, and are of course the basis of why we are debating here. After all, if we all thought the same thing, there would be no debates. However, beliefs must be backed up with evidence. Without evidence, they are nothing in these debates. And the key thing is that all debates should be polite. This is supposed to be fun after all. It is okay to disagree with someone, just don't go for the insults if you do. If, as you say, I am wrong in debates, then it should be easy to counter my points with specific evidence with insults or inflamatory behavior.
I don't mean to insult anyone here, and I hope people take my comments as they are intended, and not as insults. As I said, the point of this forum was to provide somewhere for polite debate. If I wanted insults, I would go to ASVS.
