Exocomps are sorta cool but defiantly NOT better than an R2 unit, the replicator multi-tool could be rendered useless by certain kinds of phased polaron and other kinds of radiation that disrupts replicators. ALL droids (and most ships) would be considered "sentient" by Star Trek's standards. Artoo shows a lot more initiative than an Exocomp. In addition to being every bit as capable (in the repair department), R2 units can interface and pretty much do whatever they want with a computer. ANY computer! They can even cook clean and knit! In a comparison between the two droids I think that an Exocomp would be more like MN-2E general maintenance droid (just kidding). But I would really compare'em to a WED Treadwell doid, in all honesty. With the exception, of the replicator multi-tool (not always usable on starships) and a repulsorlift. Other than that they're not any better than a "wed-tread".
