First of all, there is a lot of testosteron at this website. Not that it's a problem, I just wish there were a few more girls had educated opinions here besides Anna. Anyway, in response to Mr. Goldman, I have to say that I disagree with much of what you said. Though it would be better than spending money on troops in Afghanistan, trying to educate cultures that have, for countless generations, valued the number of children you bear as a sign of wealth, is destined to fail. It is similiar to missionaries trying to spread Christianity in Africa in the 19th and 20th centuries- ideally good, maybe; but futile. It's near impossible to try to change someone's culture (my god, think what people say when American's are critisized!) and is it even right?
I dont think that educating third world countries is the answer, when there is just as big a problem in first would "developed" nations. Developed, we are, if you count development as how many Starbucks and McDonalds per capita. But, in my annoyance i am getting off track. Countries like China are doing more than their part to try to account for VERY serious world overpopulation. I dont agree with the one-child system, because like joe said, who wants a female baby? not even me. A one child limit brings the population down- a 2 child limit is more reasonable and gender-friendlier. America's population is spiraling out of control! Drive down the street- there are more cars now than ever before. Every school has an overcrowding problem. Perhaps poverty does breed (no pun intended) high population, but high population produces poverty. Overcrowded schools mean a lack of funding for gifted programs, and normal programs, and a general, long term decrease in education levels. More people now than ever are going to college, but from what I hear from my parents/ grandparents, its 20 times easier to get accepted and to graduate (ah, money.) The property on the dirt road by my house is for sale, and more houses are being built everyday. My woods are slowly being developed. Thats such shit. I'm not a Nazi, or a racist, I'm not singling out any one country- overpopulation is a GLOBAL problem.
