Nevada: Yucca Mountain.....Please enlighten me?!

Well, I apologize for being so ignorant, however since ignorance is bliss...I suppose that is how I remain so happy!

I do not know 1) The damage nuclear waste has on the planet, and 2) The reasons for Bush's designation of it.
I am aware, however, that nuclear waste is BAD for the environment.

I would just like some clarification or explanation by those who understand it all...
Isn't permanantly burying spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste completely underground 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas just as damaging to the environment as burying it anywhere?
I do not like the president's decision on this, however I only do not like it from what I know. I would appreciate some explanation, please? Thanks
