People are poor in this country because the poor are in a vicious cycle; one that once they are in (because their parents were poor), it’s extremely difficult to get out. What we become is based so much on the environment we have grown up in, the experiences we have lived through, the people we have talked to and the parents/guardians who have raised us. Many children living in inner city neighborhoods have probably had parents who may not have graduated from high school who have just put them down all their life. These kids have been exposed to a life where they see that their only peers succeeding and making money are those who get out of the city to play pro ball or those dealing drugs. If they go to a school that may be at risk of losing its accreditation and go home for help on homework to parents who couldn’t answer an elementary mathematical question, the value of education and desire to learn is going to go right down the drain at a very young age. They graduate with sub par grades (if they didn’t drop out) and end up working minimum wage jobs for the rest of their lives. They go on to have kids who share the same fate as them. It’s pretty easy for a lot of us to just say that all it takes is a little priority and motivation (ideally I would love to think that), but as Dan Rechel said “It’s easier said than done.”

(If you haven’t seen the documentary Hoop Dreams, I recommend checking it out, I think it shows first hand a lot of the issues in inner cities as well as the problems encountered growing up there)
