here in lexington, one burial mound of interest is the adena - located off newtown pike and is a part of (like everything else) u of k property...there are "no tresspassing" signs, yet an obvious lack of security as well as remnants of picnic tables suggest (1) someone is not doing their job and (2) it used to be open to the public (legally). i've been out there during the day and night- and while not "creepy" per say- you definately walk away feeling spiritually "touched."
if you go out newtown pike, past the interstate exits and ramps (coming from downtown) the mound is on your right..look for the "no tresspassing" and you're home free
