Subject: 3-Seconds or not?

Situation: A6 is in the key for 2 seconds. Teammate A7 shoots for goal. While the ball is in the air, the 3 seconds have passed. Ball misses the basket and ring, and bounces of the backboard into A6's hands. 3-seconds or not?

I was led to believe by a BOCI tutor this is a 3-second call. However, Mr. Spain now claims that the fact that it missed the ring is totally irrelevant, and the moment the shot goes up, the 3-second rule does not count.

However, my interpretation is that it is a disadvantage on the defense, thus the 3-seconds should be called.
