I am not sure about HDCD, Chuck, as that is a fairly new format to me, but to my ears, MP3 is as good as the original recording. - This is not to say that an MP3 cannot be messed up much as could a tape recording.
I suppose what I am trying to say, is the quality of the recording rests on the listeners ear.
I have some MP3's that are even better than the originals, if you can believe that. The whole secret to recording MP3's is in the method used.- It depends on the bitrate and the frequency at which it is recorded.
There is such a thing as very bad MP3 recordings and also perfect MP3 recordings.
On the other hand, converting MP3's to CD format is relatively easy, with very little, if any loss in quality if done right. (Keep in mind that some folks can't butter a bisquit !).
