Campus murder
By MADELEINE AREK
A FINAL-year architecture student was found dead on Saturday morning in front of a classroom at the University of Technology’s main campus at Taraka, Lae, Morobe province.
The body of the 28-year-old from Rakamanda in Wabag, Enga province, is at the Angau Memorial Hospital morgue.
Lae police detectives were at the scene on Saturday, but could not establish the cause of death. However, the victim is believed to have been murdered.
Police said they were notified of the death by Kuima Security guards at the university on Saturday morning and went to the scene.
Police said the student’s clothes were folded and left on the third floor while his naked body was found splashed in blood on the ground floor of the three-storey building.
His body was later wrapped up and taken to the hospital.
“A post mortem should reveal the cause of death,” Det Sgt Russell Egimbari said yesterday.
“When we went, he was lying naked on his back with blood coming out of his nose.
“There were no wounds and the back of his head was very soft, sustained from a heavy hit,” Mr Egimbari said.
He said witnesses, who have refused to come out fearing repercussions, say the incident occurred around 2.30am on Saturday during a heavy downpour.
Most of the students are still on semester break while others are in Port Moresby for the National Union of Students’ games at the University of Papua New Guinea Waigani campus.
A curfew has been imposed.

It's frightening so see this sort of killing going on in a place where I thought would have been the safest in Lae. I just hope it is not related to the fight going on at Rakamanda. It will be a disaster if it is as no one from troublesome places in Enga will be attending any form of schools in the country. The only place to be safe might be back in the village.

My first instincts upon reading that article was a reflection of payback killing. Unitech is definitely supposed to be the safest place around Lae esp. when its within an academic department building at odd hours. Students have the freedom and flexibility to study and do their work as and when they feel to.

This somewhat appears the poor colleague's movement may have been tracked for whatever reason he was murdered at an odd hour like 0230. Another asset lost. A total frustration and disgrace.

Fellows,

This is a shocking news and it's also very sad to hear that one of us is gone.

Just a reminder that we need to also TAKE EXTRA CARE WHEN TRAVELLING HOME.

Un-happy Engan.

hey pipol,

This was indeed a sad case in history when young brains. However, i have reservation in pointing figures at the cause of death, especially when there is no confirmed facts.

lets not believe in "would be" causes. I would rather wait for police and doctors to confirm the cause of death. Let's not raise another question coz media is there to make money. Truth comes later.

facts:
he was seen drunk during the day; he takes drugs heavily; the two grill doors we closed but he was suspected of climbing over the window or something; i guess some lecturers must have been working late (business studies and his dept) and they might have some clues.

so please, lets no scare our upcoming students from troubled places in attending Unitech. I'm one kid who have attended this school a decade a go when my tribes were at war but i usually feel safe studying and living in Unitech then my brothers at upng.

otherwise, i feel sorry for Bonney Ipi who passed too early.
