Arthur needs Polye to be the next PM
I HAVE observed our MPs very closely in and out of Parliament for over 12 years now.
Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare is undeniably a legend in PNG politics.
He is not Sepik, nor is he from a particular region, but a true nationalist.
His biggest concern is the future of PNG after his reign.
In that regard, I share my observations and thoughts as to how that future political landscape might be in two scenarios with the notion that Arthur Somare becomes the next prime minister.
Scenario one – Arthur becomes PM without Don Polye’s support.
The recent unfolding of events as believed to be orchestrated by the Prime Minister, under the influence of Arthur and Patrick Pruaitch, as presumed by most, is to extend a strategy to belittle and cripple Polye from expanding in a more systematic way.
The taking away of the CSTB and placing it with Finance, the fuelling of the petitioner’s case in Polye’s court of disputed returns, and now the so-called stripping of the ministry from Polye, are all pointing towards that direction.
At the point when table is prepared to negotiate for prime minister by NA parliamentary caucus, naturally Polye might, without emotion, tactfully suppress numbers on Arthur’s side to take it himself or more likely, in this term of Parliament, give it to another person such as Dr Puka Temu.
Of the two, Pruaitch seems to be more on the offensive in the plot against Polye than Arthur, as suspected by observers. That means Pruaitch could possibly jeopardise Arthur’s opportunity to become prime minister if Arthur needs Polye’s support.
However, both Arthur and Polye are numerically stronger in NA politics and for Arthur to master numbers without Polye would give rise to another prime minister other than Arthur or Polye within NA.
Scenario two – Arthur becomes PM with Polye’s support.
Sir Michael, in his inner-most heart, wishes Arthur to become the next prime minister.
However, he will not openly put his choice on NA’s table because he is not only father to Arthur but PNG as a whole.
That situation means Arthur must work and sweat to master the numbers by creating strong underlying relationship with people who will matter in NA, primarily.
Arthur is more open and outspoken in direct harmony with his heart. However, Pruaitch seem to wear a contemptuous-look and stand aloof in his dealing with other MPs and the public.
And that could jeopardise Arthur’s ability to create dependable relationship for years to come because he is not different to Pruaitch.
At the pointing of voting for NA’s party leadership, let alone the prime minister’s job under OLOPPAC Law, Arthur will need Polye’s support because there is now a resentment that the prime minister’s post should change from the Somares and Mamose to someone and somewhere else.
Although Polye has the full support of his 11 MPs from the Highlands region, he will not master the numbers from other regions. However, he will decide who will be next prime minister in this term of Parliament if the Grand Chief relinquishes.
Arthur is personally raised and bred by Sir Michael himself and, without blemish, he is ready-made in this term of Parliament to take on the helm of politics.
That is undisputable. It is written on the wall that Arthur and Polye will take this country forward for another 30 years.
However, where and how can this combination work after it has deteriorated over a year now?
Arthur needs to lend his hand and lift Polye when he’s down now so as to lift himself.
