Here's what you can do to setup your own domain name/site, etc.
Steps (In Order of Process)

1. Search/Identify (your) Domain Name for use
----------------------------------------------------
Think of a domain name you want to use. Once thought through, you want to make sure that this domain name has not been taken up already by someone else. To identify your domain name as being either available or taken up (by some other party), you can go to any Domain Name Registrar website and lookup the domain name. Or you could go to the Whois.com website and look it up there too. This should tell you whether its available or already taken up by some third party.
2. Register Domain Name through Domain Registrar

Once you have an available domain name, you can purchase it directly from that Registrar's site, or any other registrars site depending on the price. I prefer to use www.GoDaddy.com as they have very cheap domain names (i.e. US $9.00 - .COM names per year) and a bagful of excellent tools to use.
Other Domain Registrars are (e.g)
- www.Register.com,
- www.melbourneit.com(.au),
- www.networksolutions.com,
- etc. Just google "register domain names".
Compare their prices and make a choice.
3. Identify/Configure Hosting Environment

The hosting environment is where you actually store your web (website) files. Hosting environments are sold seperately from domain name registration. Some Registrars sell both hosting/domain names so you can do both using one Registrar. They come in at affordable deals also per year. GoDaddy has US$9.00/yr for domain names and US$45/yr for hosting. The hosting is a subscription type business unfortunately. Unless you setup your own public hosting infrastructure.
4. Map Domain Name to point to your Hosting Environment

Now you can go back to your domain name settings and configure it to point to your hosting IP Address. Hosting environments should always provide you with a public IP address. (IP address 10.x.x.x OR 192.x.x.x are private IP addresses for internal LAN use and cannot be sold)
Once you have your domain name mapped -> to your hosting environment. All you have left now is developing your site.
5. Develop website OR Load site/web files -> Hosting Environment

If you have not developed your website(s) yet, you can start now by using some cool website development tools like Dreamweaver, Homesite, UltraEdit, Microsoft VisDev, or MS Visual Studio. These are cool yet comprehensive development tools.
You can also use the most simplest tool like MS Word and save document files as WEB document(.htm) files.
Once you are done with all your website development/design work, your final step is to upload these files to your hosting environment. To upload files you will use FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to upload. Google "FTP" for more information. Or you can follow my steps with the choice of the FTP tool I prefer using. Go to www.sourceforge.net/projects/FileZilla/ and download FileZilla FTP Client and install it on your PC (Development Environment). This is a free tool. Use this to upload your files to your hosting environment. You can connect FTP to your hosting through the IP address you were given, or through your newly registered and configured domain name.
6. Test/Launch Site

Now you're all set. Just go type in your website address by the new domain name (i.e. www.mydomainname.com) and you should be able to browse your new website.
