Highlands Post Wednesday 28th November , 2007 Vital skills drill Twelve nursing officers at the Wabag General Hospital in Western Highlands last week began a month-long attachment with general hospitals �\ Alotau and Goroka in Milne Bay and Eastern Highlands provinces. This is the third batch of officers from the hospital to go on attachment to gain experience in bigger hospitals. Wabag General Hospital gained status as a public provincial facility in 2003 and is still in its infancy stage. Acting chief executive officer Peter Pindan, when sending off the team, said nursing provided the biggest manpower for any hospital and it was appropriate that they first went out, experienced and learned about the functions of bigger hospitals before serving in the province. �gYou�fre not going out on a vacation. We send you to get yourselves exposed to the big hospital environment. You should be equipped with enough skills, experience and technical knowhow to improve our output,�h Mr Pindan told the officers. Most of the staff were recruited from rural health services when the hospital was declared as a public facility in 2003. They lack the skills to work in a hospital environment.
