The final outcome of the conference, despite strong opposition, was the AIDS virus came from monkeys to humans. That was and is the official theory. I personally find this discussion topic very interesting. Recent DNA studies has also shown that the AIDS virus has no "past", meaning there is no clear molecular evolutionary clock for this virus. All other naturally occuring virus have a clear molecular evolutionary clock. The current molecular evolutionary clock of the AIDS virus shows that all currently occuring strains of the HIV virus had one ancestor and that past is very recent. HIV is commonly jokingly labelled as a faulty virus because it does not possess the mechanism to repair error messages on its DNA when reproducing, an ability all other virus possess. Another interesting discovery has been that about 3% of all caucasian population is immune to the HIV virus. This immunity is due to the lack of a receptor (structure) on the surface of the white blood cell that is used by the HIV virus to enter the cell. This essentially means a person who lacks this receptor can have the virus in him/her but will be completly immune! Whats more, it is inheritable! Scientist are now studying this with a view to create a vaccine. A recent study by our very own UPNG medical school carried out a study last year to determine the presence of the gene which codes for this defective receptor which by default renders an individual immune to the HIV virus. And the DNA studies did not show the presence of the gene in melanesian population. Infact we now know that HIV virus in PNG is a strain which is more virulent (stronger, thus progression to AIDS after infection is very fast).
