Hummm, Mine laid their first eggs in the paddock just near the pens. Was easy to find. I Just got my first guineas this year in June from Brenda. What I'm learning about guineas is from reading the FowlAround posts and again Texas A&M. Mine free range all the time and perch in the big oak tree just in front of the pen under the security light and the nest is just about 20 ft away from that on the other side of the fence still under the security light. Brenda told me their first clutch is usually pretty small eggs which I've seen and that the hatch may not be that good. Understandable! So far, other than the two snakes i've killed and have since put the moth balls down around the pen uncrushed,(WORKS) I have not had another preditor. The neighbors dog that killed one is now dead. Not by me but by another neighbor that has females in heat and the neighbor dog was trying to breed with them so he shot it.. Doesn't hurt my feelings at all. I hated that dog anyway. As far as the size of pen, Hummm. That's something I'll have to research. Seems kinda small to me though. Some people have different experiences with guineas. I've heard some tell that guineas are not good mothers and others say they are great. To be on the safe side for now, I would let them range in a large pen if you have one and see what they do and how mama cares for them before I would let them out to free range in the open. I have alot of open space meaning no underbrush to speak of so I can see what is going on in the distance but alot of people have woods that have undercover so it's hard to keep an eye on them. My place is mostly big oak trees and dogwood
. Non of my guineas eggs have hatched. I don't know when they were laid or when she started setting them but when/if they do, I will let you know what I see and learn from it.
