A good stategy for any time that you are invited to eat at someone else's house is not to ask if you can bring anything, but to ask what is on the menu and then TELL the hostess that you will be bringing a huge salad. If they say 'oh no, you don't need to', than simply say 'oh no, I insist, it is the least i can do!" This is a good strategy since you will know that no ,matter what you can fill your plate with so much salad that you won't have much room for things that aren't so good for you. Carry a large purse and drop your favorite low-cal dressing in the purse! The rest of the menu sounds like there's nothing you can eat? (for example lazagna) then you may have to resort to telling your hostess you have had some serious health concerns and have to be on a restricted diet. (I don't advise telling most people you are dieting...maybe family or really close friends...but otherwise you may get sabotaged by the type of comments like 'oh you can take this one night off!" I have told my in-laws since we have had to visit up there for extended stays and frequent visits with helping out with my father-in-law. It has been OK, since my husband has been totally behind me. In that situation, I pack several coolers...bring all my own food, and basically take over their kitchen! I go to the supermarket and get what I need as well when we are up there. I make my own meals and sit and eat with them with whatever the rest of the family is eating. And it has been a darned good thing since they have had things like really greesy baked ziti with butter-loaded garlic bread for the meals!!

I imagine that when we go back up there that I will have it even harder since other relatives will be gathering there then. I just have to stick with doing what is good for me. yes, it is harder than when I am at home....they have pies and cakes and such....but on the other side, I am not alone, so not much chance of anyone not knowing if I induldge!! keeps one a bit more honest! LOL!

I have figured out how to make most things with less fat and calories....there are lots of good things on-line as well as great products now in the stores that we didn't have previously to substitute in recipes.

So does your family do a big shindig with lots of food around the Christmas season?

hugs,
Dreemy
