Hi everyone!!
(come on, come on...join in the flurry....summer cometh!)
I have used splenda for quite awhile, and like scarlet I prefer it...however I am suspicious of something.... I have to say I use a lot of it since I make up my own 1/2 gallon of green tea everyday with it, use it on my oatbran + flax meal hot cereal in the AM and use it in decaf coffee as well. Then add to that the sugar free hard candies I carry around and I probably am comsuming more than the average person. I think it can cause tummy upset, particularly bloating and gas...so if this occurs, try to watch the amount you are consuming. I particularly notice it if I suck on too many of the hard candies (like when sitting through a long event when my mouth gets dry ro such). I am trying to experiment and seeing if this is the cause...but so far it seems to be. I do use flavored decafs in the evening to avoid eating ANYTHING after supper (that really makes a difference for me weightloss-wise)...and then of course the splenda is going in the decaf. So recently I tried substituting veggie broth (15 calories a cup and entirely fat free) in the evening and have had less occurrances of the tummy trouble.
I think I have developed IBS over the past few years. I went searching online about 6 months ago to read up on it and am now taking 2 caps of citrucel (the only one doesn't make me sick and bring on worse issues) 3 X a day. Then I am taking an IBS OTC at bedtime and I am doing much much better. the worse culpret seems to be stress. There was recently an article in Woman's world magazine about using citrucel up to 3 X a dayt to avoid overeating. Used sensibly it can really help you through those inbetween meal periods to not snack unwisely. I say, "used sensibly" since it would not be healthy to try to use such a supplement to limit one's calories too much to the point of poor nutrition. Believe me, the starvation thing doesn't work in the long run and can cause a slew of probs...DON'T DO IT! Even on too low a caloric intake you can suffer mood swings, depression, brittle nails and hair loss, just to name a few! BTW the no-carb/low-carb diets can do the same. You need carbs. The difference is in the KIND of carb. Do not skimp on fresh veggies, especially dark leafy green and non-starchy ones, and get in at minimum 2 to 3 fresh fruits a day. As for the starchy carbs, make em high in fiber and the most nutritional bang for your caloric buck...with potatoes, eat the skin, with corn don't puree it, with grains, make em whole grain. Flax is excellent since it has all those fab omegas. watch out for flour...your body doesn't need it and it along with white sugar makes yeast grow in your system, clogging up everything and holding onto lbs.
Get small amounts of healthy fats, a little olive oil or a 1/4 cup of raw or dry roasted nuts a day.
I am finding that if i eat bread I won't loose and even gain. My body is getting very sensitive as I age. Bottom line though, you have to consider total caloric intake, if not per day then certainly per week. Some people are into alternating between like 1200 cal days and 1500 cal days. I don't know. You have to figure out how your body responds, and what it needs. I am listening to all the stuff in the news, like about dairy...but I don't buy the one-size-fits-all stuff as far as how much or how often. This 3 servings a day thing is rather queer....for who? A 180 lb, 6 ft young man? A 5' elderly woman? A nursing mom? I mean come'on that just doesn't make sense. I eat low-fat dairy everyday....but it ranges between 100 to 150 cal a day of it. Which would not be the case if I ate 3 servings of cheese everyday!! that could be as much as 600 cal. even with low-fat cheese! And I am finding out that I loose better with the 1/4 cup of nuts a day (even when I try substituting the same # of cal in its place, I don't loose as well, or even at all!) I also take fatty acid supplements with omegas, etc.
OK everyone, lets be real losers! LOL!
hugs,
Dreemy
