Hobbes left England because his thoughts were stirring much controversy. The Republic govt was just taking footing at the time of Hobbes' writings so you can well imagine the sort of response he woul get from those in power. Yes, he was in favour of Monarchy. The Monarchy govt was not doin well at that time. After his writing, Charles2 was beheaded.
