Subject: In Time of Bird Flu Overseas, Live Dinner Beckons in Queens

By DAN BARRY
Published: October 12, 2005
"THE chickens peered from their cages with searching looks that asked whether there was something they ought to know. The rabbits declined to do what rabbits do, since the mood wasn't quite right. The guinea fowl still preened in the face of doom, because, hey, at least they're not chickens.

These animals do not belong to the world's saddest petting zoo, but rather to R.D.'s Live Poultry Market in Ozone Park, Queens. And no, said the owner, Permanand Raghoo, the animals are not given names like Bessie and Red. That would only complicate things.

Dozens of chickens, hatched in Pennsylvania, shipped by a Brooklyn wholesaler and now confined in stainless-steel cages, failed to avoid eye contact with their potential consumers. The white-feathered chickens go for $1.25 a pound, live weight; the dark-feathered for $1.50 a pound. People think they have a different taste, but Mr. Raghoo said they all taste like chicken."

("They all taste like chicken" -- now where have I heard that before?)
