Police present Graves with special gift

TORONTO - Known for devoting time and effort to countless worthy causes and less fortunate people, left wing Adam Graves had a good deed come his way Friday at Toronto Police Headquarters.

Graves' late father, Henry, was a police officer for 30 years. When Henry retired, he returned his badge and other department-issued items as per police's policy.

Graves hoped to secure the badge as an heirloom. Some of Graves' friends made overtures to the Toronto police, and on Friday, department chief Julian Fantino presented Graves with a framed case that included Henry's badge, shoulder lapels and sergeant bars.

``This is something special for my kids, so they can know something about their granddad,'' said Graves, whose three children are under 7 years of age. ``We'll hang it up in the house. I was always fortunate I had someone I could revere and look up to. It was my dad.''

Graves has vivid memories of helping his dad lock his badge and gun in a desk drawer when Henry came home after his shift.

``He'd put the safety lock on the gun, and I was allowed to carry it with two hands,'' Graves said. ``I'd put the gun and the badge in the desk, and that's the exact badge in this display.''

Henry was 55 when he succumbed to cancer in June 2000.

Returning the favor, Graves got Fantino tickets to Saturday's game.
