Subject: Can the Sharks pull it off?

I just found this forum a couple of days ago. The Sharks are my third team behind Detroit and Dallas but I don't live anywhere near the Bay Area (or California) so I hardly ever get to see them play on t.v. and it's a little tough to always know what fans are REALLY thinking and saying about them (the internet articles can't really convey that).

I thought I would ask a few questions here (a couple of them are sort of statistical but one of the things i do is data analysis so i can't help it! - i apologize in advance!). All of the stat stuff is through December 21:

1. it's said that when a team falls like a rock (like the sharks and avs this year or the stars last year), it's usually because the players stop listening to the coach. do you guys think that's what happened in san jose or was sutter just the patsy?

2. it's also said, as goes the goalie, so goes the team. of course nabokov's contract thing in the beginning couldn't help but do you think their non-shark season so far is just a goaltending thing?

3. i created a stat i call GA/GF which is for every goal scored against a team, how many goals is the team scoring for itself. the league average is 1.02 - the sharks are at 0.90. to make it to the playoffs, s.j.(in 11th place) would have to jump over chicago (1.00 GA/GF), Colorado (1.05) and Anaheim (1.06).

the league average for Goals Against & Goals For is 89. san jose has scored 92 Goals For with 102 goals scored against them. this (coupled with the GA/GF stat) indicates to me that they have a severe defense problem since they're scoring above the league average and the 3 teams they have to pass are all scoring BELOW the league average.

do you guys who get to see the sharks play all the time agree - are the sharks troubles primarily defense? also, if you think it IS defense, do you think it's just the goalie, just the defensemen, or a combination of both?

4. san jose is winning 39% of their games. the 3 teams they have to pass:

1. chicago (10th place) = 48%
2. colorado (9th place) = 36%
3. anaheim (8th place) = 42%

do you think they can pull it out this season and make it to the playoffs?

THANX! :)
