well, i don't work for them YET! this proposal is a business plan that i've been working on for 4 years (off and on). took that long because i was studying and analyzing their salary stuff for that long (which is the main focus of the plan to mr. bettman et al). i wanted to make sure that my ducks were in a row. other stuff's in the plan as well (marketing things they haven't tried and some strategic planning initiatives as well). actually, i did have a really brief business thing with the NHL's legal department a couple of years ago.

anyway, i'm not sure if you're asking how i got into the data analysis field or how i got interested in the business side of the nhl. i'll answer both (and i'll try to be brief!)!

ANALYSIS STUFF
took stats in college and i've used it ever since. what i love about it is, it allows you to determine (with some investigation) not just HOW MANY but WHY! and that's what businesses really need to know. everybody can collect data but there aren't that many you can then, take that data and turn it into useful information. and most of the time, the data isn't saying what it looks like it's saying.

HOCKEY
well, i'm a hockey fan! couple this with my "inquiring mind", i've always tracked my own hockey stuff. in 1998 when the first hints of a lockout started to surface, i thought i would take a look at what really was going on. as usual, the data isn't telling the story that it appears to be telling on the surface and the one that most folks think it's telling. i'll give you a hint: a salary cap will have absolutely no affect on the problem. it might look good for public relations reason but it won't change much (these poor boys need me!).

WORK FOR THE NHL
you're in luck! the nhl is the type of business called an oligopoly - basically meaning, a handful of players control the industry (whether you look at the business of professional sports, big business - 4 major leagues, or within the nhl, again, major business, but only 30 franchises). this makes it easier because there aren't a lot of people you have to get to.

if you can get an internship, that would be great! it will give you an in. if not, but you still want to work for the league, then determine a need that is not being filled and fill it. this will take a lot of work on your part but it can be done. if what i propose to them turns into a job, then that's great but if it doesn't, that's okay too because my original intent wasn't to get employed by them, just to help them out a little. but, the exposure can't hurt if i do decide down the road that it would be nice to get free tickets to games so maybe i SHOULD change employers! :)

but the main thing is don't let anyone EVER tell you that wanting to work for the NHL is a stupid idea!
