Subject: Starting a thread here for B/Gers: please could that group read this?

Owing to time zone differences may I appeal to fellow members of the B/G group to post here instead of messaging. If you could just check in, maybe with a fic suggestion or two, over the next couple of days? There are only a few of us so it shouldn't be too unwieldy.

I vote for Yahtzee's excellent fic "Destination Unknown"

Alternatively JK Philips' "Death Brings Clarity". URL when I've checked it but it's at buffygiles.com archive.

My suggestions are "The Power of Friends" by Rari Coss and "A Mile in His Moccasins" by Gileswench. Both are found at The List

Ah Rari! Perhaps I should declare an interest as she's my beta reader...
Actually I find the Roger and Paul universe too A/U for mainstream tastes. How about "Watchers' Retreat"?
"A Mile in..".was great writing but the cross-gender thing creeped me personally - a testament to Wenchie's skills, but I think other shippers would find it very outre.
Should we go NC17 to start with or let them in gently?
Forgot to mention Gail Christison: we should consider one of hers: maybe "Wounds" as that is relatively low rated (PG 13 or so)
I'm sure you know her site, but it's at
http://www.wickedsky.com/oncemore

Yahtzee's fic is getting positive reviews from posters on the Television Without Pity BtVS fanfic forum, some of whom profess to B/G allergies.

I'm way behind in my fanfic reading, so I may just play catch-up here a bit with some of youall's recommendations.

I'm thinking PG, PG13. Although the potentially squicked will probably opt out on B/G anyway.

I like the idea of a regular B/G writer as the first rec, however.

"Wounds" is a good choice. I forgot to mention "Single White Slayer" by Gileswench and "Beauty" by Lily2332. Both are at buffygiles.com

Not "Beauty" I think. Too OTT on the angst. Also with the Olivia bashing: bashing canon partners of the pair you want together is a fic no-no in my book.
Single White Slayer is good tho'.
Still rooting for Yahtzee, because she tackles the old "father figure" chestnut head on.

[> Checking in with some quick thoughts -- Missy, 19:11:50 07/28/02 Sun (h24-76-95-3.vc.shawcable.net/24.76.95.3)

I'm still playing catch-up on my fanfic reading, but here are some quick thoughts on what I think we should be aiming for in our first selection (much of which has already been brought up):
-I'd like something as close to canon and the show as possible as opposed to AU, just because it sets the ship somewhere that people are already familiar with (and since we don't have the most popular ship, why give people too much new stuff to deal with)
-I'd also like to keep it post-highschool because I think we all saw the stuff that came up on the boards a month or two ago surrounding a Dawn/Spike ship

Can't think of anything else at the moment. Off to do more reading. I just finished "Destination Unknown," which I quite liked, and I'll check back in a couple of days; possibly with a rec or two.

Totally agree on the keep it out of High School. I prefer those anyway, making an exception only for Anne Manley Haight because of her great background reasons and characterisation. Although I love it I can't rec e.g. Autumnal Equinox as a fic to share: Buffy's only 17 (which is legal in England) and it's pretty much wall to wall sex for several chapters
Also on the close to canon. A/U is fun but as you say we need to keep the unfamiliar to a minimum.

And Yahtzee's stuff is fabulous too! It's just a shame there's a length-limit because I think Kris Wahlberg's Transformations Quartet is really just too good to miss!

I mean, it's a classic. But it is NC-17 and High School era too. Or there's always JBG's stuff. Or Kim Wylie's Sew The Chicken series is great. Lemme know what you guys think. Man, this is gonna be harder than I thought!

Good to hear from you Denorios. But I think we should avoid underage fics as the potential squick factor is just too great.
I see that the "other" group are possibly choosing a Yahtzee fic so maybe we should go Gail or Wenchie this time, then I'd plug Destination Unknown even harder next time!
Denorios, are "Wounds" (Gail) and "Single White Slayer" (Gileswench)popular with you too?

Definitely 'Wounds', because I just adore it and it's one of the first fics I ever read! I haven't actually read 'Single White Slayer' but I think I'll trot off now and read it, and get back to you. But it'll be 'Wounds', I think.

'Tomorrow', or it might be 'Tomorrows', not 100% sure, but there is emotional angst and less gore than Wounds and some low key B/G kissage (aaahh). On the Once More site.

I just reread both Wounds and Tomorrow, and I think you're right. Wounds is a little over-angsty, and Tomorrow manages to wrap up a few of the Season 4 threads that I think the show didn't really do. So I'm throwing my hat in the ring for Tomorrow by Gail. Anybody else?

Count me for "Tomorrow" also.

I'll go along with it, although given my druthers I'd probably select something a bit more plot heavy, and with a bit less emphasis on the 'wronged Giles' theme. We're selecting something that the non-B/G'ers are going to (theoretically) read. I think Gail is a great first choice, however. I'll leaf through her site tonight, see if I can spot anything I think might work better.

with regards to the plot angle. I still do really like the Yahtzee fic first suggested, but if there are others that look like good possibilities, I'm totally open to them. Besides, it's much fun reading them.

since I recced it. But any others of Gail you may find would be fine. Problem is most of hers are NC17 at some point.
