Condit's PAC to be run by son
August 2, 2002 Posted: 05:10:09 AM PDT

By JIM MILLER
BEE CAPITOL BUREAU SACRAMENTO -- Ceres Rep. Gary Condit's state political action committee has been taken over by his son, who intends to use the fund to advance various causes in the Central Valley, the committee's attorney said Thursday.Los Angeles lawyer Stephen Kaufman said Chad Condit intends to take the committee "in a new direction.""Chad has some ideas of what he wants to do with this committee," said Kaufman, who mentioned possible grants for veterans affairs and to foster economic development in the region.

A campaign finance statement filed this week shows that the committee, the Justice PAC, paid $40,000 to Chad Condit and $60,000 to his sister, Cadee Condit, for campaign consulting from Feb. 17 through June 30. The PAC ended June with a $146,487 balance, down from $277,537 a year earlier.Kaufman said the money compensated the Condit children solely for their Justice PAC duties. The payments do not reflect their work for their father's unsuccessful campaign in the Democratic primary, he said.It is a crucial distinction. Many contributions to the state PAC came from businesses, which by law cannot contribute to federal campaigns. But campaign finance experts said the payments raise eyebrows because of Chad and Cadee Condit's high-profile roles in Gary Condit's campaign leading up to the March 5 primary and relative lack of compensation from his federal account.Federal records show that Condit's campaign paid less than $9,000 to Cadee Condit and nothing to Chad Condit from July 1, 2001, through June 30. The records show that Gary Condit's congressional fund is almost depleted after paying for the campaign, and for legal bills and other expenses related to the Chandra Levy case."Clearly it raises a serious question of whether (Condit) was using a state PAC to work for his congressional campaign," said Larry Noble, a former general counsel to the Federal Election Commission who now is executive director of the Center for Responsive Politics.State law requires family members on political committee payrolls to perform demonstrable work. In the 19 weeks covered by Wednesday's statement, the Justice PAC received no contributions and gave out civic donations totaling $3,500.Robert Biersack, a spokesman for the Federal Election Commission, said the agency would need more information before considering any inquiry.Chad Condit declined to comment Thursday, saying "I don't talk to The Modesto Bee." The congressman's spokesman also declined to comment.Meanwhile, Christina Holland, a former Ceres resident who earlier this year said she was working on a Condit documentary, received $250 from the Condit campaign for phone banking. She received $2,500 from the Justice PAC.The PAC also paid $10,000 to San Bernardino County Supervisor Jerry Eaves, who served with Condit in the state Assembly in the 1980s.A civic group that received PAC money was Victims Rights Awareness of Ripon. Janice Keson said the $2,500 donation helped many relatives of crime victims.

Gary Condit gives himself to the dark side

August 3, 2002 Posted: 05:00:16 AM PDT

The Bee and the public take no pleasure in the continuing self-destruction of Gary Condit's political career. It is sad to see a man who did so well for so many years in elective office end things so badly. The fact that he's paying his children, Chad and Cadee, a total of $100,000 from his political action committee fund for "consulting services" rendered during his failed primary campaign is legal, but we doubt it's what the contributors had in mind when they gave to his PAC.

Nor do we believe Condit contributors expected that $10,000 from the same PAC fund would go to San Bernardino County Supervisor Jerry Eaves, Condit's fellow Gang of Five crony from their Assembly days. Eaves was indicted four times between February 2000 and April 2002 on numerous corruption charges -- most recently bribery, mail fraud and conspiracy. He's even had to pay fines for some of them.

Like Condit, Eaves refused to give up his office; unlike Condit, he won re-election in November. If convicted of the charges pending against him, he will have to leave office.Condit still has five months left to serve and continues to embarrass the 18th Congressional District. He was the sole vote in the House against the expulsion of James Traficant, the former Ohio congressman convicted of various corruption charges and sentenced to eight years in prison. His constituents deserve better representation than that.
