With a great yawn the creature stood up. He was bored. Bored of life within the tribe. Bored with life within the plains. Bored with life in general. What he longed for was adventure and excitement. Something, anything that might brighten his predictable life with the other Silent Paws in his tribe.

He moved stealthily away from his tribe mates. The last thing he needed was one of them trying to stop him. Not that they could of course. Noone stopped him once he made up his mind to do a thing.

As he slipped through the tall grass of the plains, intent upon the mountains, his mind wandered. Why was it, he wondered, that none of the Silent Paw had dared to cross the great peaks? Could it be that the land to the other side was unlivable? Or perhaps it was the humans.

Yes, he thought, I believe that that must be it. The humans on the other side are too barbaric to live with us. He nodded his head, and a smile came to his face. Maybe I shall have to cross the mountains and harass these uncultured people.

He stopped at the base of the mountains and turned his head up to the sky. Golden moonlight reflected in his violet eyes. Yet his blue and black coat blended into the darkness that shrouded the great mountains.

"Ah yes Branden," he muttered to himself. "You truly are a child of the darkness itself." With not so much as a glance back he began climbing the mountains.
