Gwenneth's eyes filled with tears and she turned her face into her boy's shoulder. ::Monet, Alexis...you should not have come.::

Jeff stared at Alexis, absolutely dumbfounded. She had been beautiful when she was happy, certainly, but now.... For a moment he wasn't sure what to think, but as he watched her weep, saw her in her weakness, he realized that she was every bit as lovely even then. But he still found himself unable to reach out to her. She confused him with her sudden swings of temperament, and he was not at all sure what to make of her.

Angie, however, seemed to hold no such reservations. She planted her feet squarely, hands on her narrow hips, and glowered down at the weeping girl. "Why? What kind of question is that? Do you honestly expect an answer? Why does anything happen in this world? Look, girl, bad things happen to everyone and there's nothing we can do about it. Sometimes you've just got to get up and keep going. Sitting there and whining about it isn't going to help, and those ridiculous tears are wasting body moisture!"

Suddenly, Jeff laughed. He didn't mean to; it just happened. He laughed so hard that he had to sit down, and when he saw his bruised and bleeding feet he laughed even more heartily. When he finally managed to calm down he found three pairs of eyes staring at him in either wonder, fear, or disgust (depending). He grinned around at his three companions.

"Are...you...mad?" Angie cried, flailing her arms. "What in the hell are you laughing at?"

She looked so angry that Jeff nearly cowered, but instead he chuckled some more. "I don't know," he replied honestly. "But Alexis...." He leaned forward and touched her shoulder. He wanted to tell her that she scared him sometimes, that there was something strange and different about her that made him uneasy, that he would give anything in the world just to see her safe and happy, that he suspected himself to be falling in love with her in spite of all this.... But in the end, all he said was, "I'm glad you're back."

Gwenneth purred as loudly as a little housecat can, stepping over to nuzzle Alexis' hand. ::All shall be well, child.::

Angelina's face contorted with rage. But deep inside, she felt that same sinking sensation of a few hours ago---the one that was, though she could not identify it, lonliness. She felt cut off, isolated from these creatures, separated from them by an impassable chasm. Filled with these conflicting feelings, she all at once found herself with nothing at all to say.
