Wesimbi looked down upon his small friend from his perch high in a thick-needled pine tree. His strong, taloned feet gripped the branch securely as he leaned out, keen eyes studying the three human children and, a distance away, the three guardians who paced them on soft paws. He was not possessed of the ability to mindspeak but he could sense a connection between the two groups, a connection that excluded the young male human. His bright blue eyes narrowed as the light breeze ruffled the gold-tipped primaries of his tightly folded wings.
Suddenly he heard a light flutter of feathers and turned his head quickly to look over his shoulder. Far in the distance, many a mile away, a pair of eagles were circling. As he watched, they descended towards the trees and disappeared from his sight. His suspicion grew and he turned again to study more closely the two groups of three. The humans had made their way onto the path that led, more or less straight, to the mountain pass. It would take them at least two days to reach it if they were determined, he judged; more if their lackadaisical pace remained steady.
He searched for a moment and at last located his small companion, well-hidden and observing the humans much more closely than he. He smiled and for a moment the spirit of adventure that had so captivated Shakira stirred his calm disposition and he wondered what the children would do if he took it upon himself to divebomb them. He chuckled and pushed these thoughts away, concentrating on his quiet observance.
If they did mean to take the pass, he decided, he would have to speak with them and turn them back. The mountains were no place for three young humans, even with their animal guardians. He settled back against the tree trunk and watched silently.
