 Angie stared in silence at the darkened roof of the cave, her mind awhirl with all she had just experienced.

"I... I never... Yeah, that answers it." She closed her mouth abruptly and swallowed hard. She wanted to speak, but was afraid that if she tried she would start to cry. After a moment, though, she composed herself enough to try again.

"I never knew," she whispered. "That... that was..." She sighed. "Unbelievable. You're so lucky... This guy, what's-his-name... Jeff! Yeah... he's so lucky. He really doesn't want to be able to do that?" She shook her head against the boy's shoulder. "What a thickhead. We'll have to show him what's what..."

She trailed off, staring into the darkness. Suddenly she wasn't sleepy anymore, but wide awake and tingling all over with the wonder of Alexis's revelation. For the briefest moment, she almost wished that she herself was Cheysuli, that she could bond that way with her lir and go running over the hills, free... Troubled, she began to do something she had not done for years, and considered her own past, silent in the darkness.
