Her wings shone like a beacon at a distance and his far-seeing eyes latched onto it at once, a star among the blue grasses, waiting for him. Darker than his own shadow, the male Angel sailed over the hills, majestic and terrible; he passed over a herd of Many-Color and they panicked, squealing and snorting and stampeding away, the shrill cries of the foals filled with terror.
Wenu smiled.
Then, quite suddenly, he was disturbed - like a spike in his mind he felt a presence coming for him, winging at incredible speed over the hills with outstretched talons and a war-scream in its throat. Wenu saw wings like tongues of flame and dipped sharply to the right, hissing, claws extended....
And then he righted himself again, surprised, for there was nothing. The skies were empty and no such presence could be sensed throughout the entire length and breadth of the Blue Valleys. But Wenu did not put the experience from his mind.
He landed a space from her and regarded her in silence. They were perfect in every way, the perfection of their race - long-limbed and well-muscled, their fur thick and flowing, long tails and large paws and identical eyes of brilliant violet. Then the black - taller and bulkier than the white - bowed to her across the short distance. Looking into her eyes, he told her without words of the threat, the one with wings of fire who was not here but was coming, and would kill them if he could.
