"So it would seem." Wes's mouth pulled grimly and he touched Nashota's shoulder. "That's enough - don't wear youself out. You did very well, Nashota, I'm impressed."
He began walking again, figuring that they might as well continue closing the distance while they were thinking. "This cannot be good," he said. "You might well be a minor prophet, Sema, speaking of transportation, for this is exactly what a kitsune can provide for those courageous and canny enough to face them. There are fourteen in all throughout the eastern half of the world, though I believe that three of them have become inaccessible."
"But why do they seek transportation?" Sema asked, giving his wings a lazy flap now and then to keep up with the greater strides of the humans.
Wesimbi shook his head. "If it were any other kitsune, I would agree that that is their aim, but this particular kitsune is different. They call her the giver, the ferry-driver, moving back and forth across the river of death. She is quite mad, which makes her doubly dangerous, but if you can get on her good side she has been known to open doors to remarkable circumstances."
"The ferry-driver." Sema looked fascinated. "Are you on her good side, then?"
Wes smiled wryly. "No. She can't stand me. She normally just kills those who annoy her, but she could not touch me."
"Kills.... And they're speaking with her now?"
"Yes. Nashota and I both saw her."
"Then there's not a moment to lose! We must get to them!" Sema flitted into the air excitedly. "Is there a kitsune nearby, Wes? We can go straight to them!"
Wes furrowed his brow in thought. He had a sinking feeling that he knew precisely why they were speaking with the giver, though they themselves might not have known it until now. And if that was true, then they would be traveling very soon. He was concentrating so hard that he forgot how to walk on human legs and stumbled, but managed to catch himself before he fell. "Yes," he said at last, "there is a kitsune near us. To the north, in a cave in the foothills of the Dark Spear. We should go there at once."
Looking ridiculously excited, Sema led the way through the air as they angled north toward the mountains. "I can't wait," he told Kira when she came up beside him. "Kitsunes! Our library never had much to say about them, they're so hard to find. Imagine landing ourselves with the one person who knows exactly where all of them are! And a mad kitsune, too! Better and better."
