Cassiel saw the two eagles descend beyond an outcropping of rock, and she bit her lip in tense anticipation of what they would find at the bottom of the path. Beside Phisto, Monet put on a burst of speed, but even on uneven ground he was no match for the speed of a long-legged Silent Paw in his prime. Phisto raced ahead, with Cassiel clinging to him, and there were clumps of blue grass around his paws when he finally came to a stop, looking at a very curious sight.
There was Gabriel - Cass recognized him immediately and nearly choked on her joy - with Rio beside him, and there was Michael standing proudly beside him, Evan perched on his arm. Raziel was there as well, sitting in the grass between Neva and the red Paw kit. In front of her brothers, however, stood someone else, a tall lithe person whose face was blocked from her sight by Gabriel. They seemed to have been talking, and there was an expectant air about them. Cassiel slid off Phisto's back, craning her neck for a better view.
Suddenly someone cried out Monet's name, and the tiger raced toward the group to greet a very pale girl that Cass had not noticed before, who stood beside a powerful-looking purple Paw male. At the disturbance everyone looked around, and Cassiel's hand flew to her mouth. Gabriel grinned with childlike delight to see her, but for the moment all she could see was the other - as tall as her with hair the same dark red as her own and curious pale eyes, quite obviously the brother she had mentally labeled as the Lost One.
She walked to them slowly, eyes brimming with tears, and though the boy looked nervous he did not flinch away when she reached out to touch his cheek. "Uriel," she said - she had always called him Uriel. "You've come back to us, then?"
Jeff swallowed hard, overwhelmed by the emotion all around him. "I...I guess so," he said, and looked around. He looked at his older sister's tearstained face, his older brother's noble pride, his younger sister's grinning excitement, his younger brother's incredulous smile - and for the first time that he could remember, Jeffrey felt at home. He had no idea what to do or say, but looking at his brother he remembered all of the wrongs he had done west of the mountains, and knelt in the grass at the warrior's feet.
"I'm sorry, Gabriel," he said. He was dimly aware of the older girl, Cassiel, kneeling to embrace Gwennie, and smiled despite the tears burning in the back of his eyes.
::An old-fashioned family reunion,:: Evan remarked privately to Michael.
::All except Dante and Khanada,:: the boy replied, and a shadow crossed his face. ::I hope they're alright.::
::The Jellicle is with Dante, remember? She won't leave him. But maybe we can all go together to find them.::
Michael smiled. ::I wish they were here to see this, though.::
