We spent the first week in San Francisco because I had a conference to attend. (This is the conference I go to every summer, which is held in a different city each year.) So, Mapguy and Gumdrop got to stay in the hotel with me, and went out to play while I went to my sessions. They swam in the pool a lot (Gumdrop's favorite activity, I think...which of course you can do in NJ as well as CA), and they went sightseeing, rode a streetcar, took in a SF Giants game at PacBell Park, and noodled around the UC Berkeley campus, where Andy went to school.

When the conference was done, we drove around Sonoma Valley and visited a few wineries, then worked our way down to LA. The coastal highway is so beautiful, but unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate. Lots of cloud cover and fog along the coastline. We stopped at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which Gumdrop also enjoyed. Her favorite, though, was the day we went to Knott's Berry Farm. Grate amusement park, and all without the high-pressure Disney sales pitches.

I had a wonderful time, but boy, I was ready to come home.

So, are you and J enjoying evenings by the pool? It's been pretty cool this summer; not so many 89-degree evenings. I know others here will really, really disagree with me, but I loves me some of those hot summer nights, where it cools off just enough to sit outside, while you're still wearing your shorts and tee shirt.
