(Kansas City, Mo.)—No. 14 seed Saint Xavier University (Ill.) shot 52.4 percent in the second half to pull away for a 60-55 victory against Langston University (Okla.) in the first round of the 2005 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship Wednesday at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.

The Cougars earned their eighth victory in their last nine games to improve to 29-6 on the year. Saint Xavier advances to the second round of the tournament to face either Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) or Faulkner University (Ala.) Friday at 9 a.m. CST.

Senior forward Michael Rojas led Saint Xavier with 19 points, while junior guard Jason Reiter chipped in with 11 points. Senior Phillip Watson contributed 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for the Cougars. Langston, which ends its season at 25-8, received 16 points and seven rebounds from junior guard Quentin Beaty. Senior guard Ryan Davis added 15 points, and senior forward Steven Alexander posted 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

After leading 27-22 at the half, Saint Xavier built a nine-point advantage midway through the second half. Langston chipped away at the deficit, and a three-pointer by Alexander with 56 seconds to go brought the Lions within 58-55. Watson was fouled on Saint Xavier’s next possession, and he made one of two free throws to extend the margin to 59-55. Junior forward Jabari Saunders sealed the victory for the Cougars by hitting another free throw with six seconds to play.
