For casual wear, think modern prep. No school uniform, but cutesy skirt-and-sweater look. That's my favorite, at least.

Make sure you are ready to go against the grain in your first pageants. I'm not trying to discourage you from the hat, but the judges will either love the originality or hate the non-conformity.
