Mary I am in the same boat as you however, The timing belt on my kia engine was destroyed and kia won't cover it warranty or no warranty (which was my case) My 2003 Kia Rio LS has over 114,000km and the timing belt just went causing the crankshaft to malfunction and the pistions and valves were bent.

Like you, the dealer gave me the guilt trip and they are advising it will cost $7000 (CDN) for a new engine or $4900 (CDN) for an used engine. The worst thing about this is that I leased the car and I have no way out but to buy the remaining part of the least and buy the engine over 5 or 6 years. It sucks to be a kia owner and I will never buy another kia again and I will tell 2 friends and they will tell 2 friends and so on and so on.
