Just as Steve and Todd were about to head over to the drink table, an audible sigh went up from the gathered people. Both boys turned to stare at the gym door. Entering through it were two of the most beautiful girls they had ever seen. Jennifer and Julie really looked amazing in their prom dresses. The mere site of them was enough to cause Steve and Todd to do a double take. Here were the same two girls that they had played little league baseball with and played tag football with. Now they were two lovely ladies, shimmering in the light like two princesses from a long forgotten time.
"WOW!" Steve exclaimed as Jennifer walked up to him. Todd echoed his statement as Julie walked up to him.
"You boys care to dance?" Jennifer asked with a huge smile on her face.
"With pleasure." Steve and Todd replied together.
The couples made their way out onto the dance floor. Angle Eyes by the Jeff Healey Band came on over the sound system. They started to dance with an unusual fluid motion.
"I didn't know you were such a good dancer, Steve." Jennifer said with some surprise to her voice.
"Jennifer, there's a lot about me you don't know." Steve replied as he spun her around and then proceeded to pull her back to him.
"I guess so." She said with a laugh.
Todd and Julie were busy dancing as well. They were really cutting up the dance floor. All eyes were on the two couples. Then a faster song came on and the dance floor cleared for the two couples. They started to really turn up the heat of their dancing as the music got faster. By now the entire dance floor was clear except for the two couples.
When the song ended, the entire gymnasium broke out in a loud round of applause. Feeling somewhat embarrassed; they made their way over to a table to take a break. Steve got all of them drinks and they proceeded to down them right away.
"Man, I never knew I could be so thirsty." Steve said with a gasp when he finished his drink.
"Yeah, no kidding. I haven't danced that hard in a long time." Todd said as he pounded back his drink.
"You guys are great dancers. Where'd you learn to move like that?" Julie asked.
"We both learned from our parents. They were great dancers in their day." Steve said, fondly remembering his parents. Then he got a glum look on his face.
"Hey, how about we head out and go to T.C. and the restaurant?" Todd said, trying quickly to change the subject.
"I'm so sorry, Steve. I didn't mean…." Julie started and then stopped. She got a bashful look on her face, like a small child that just got scolded.
"Steve, are you all right?" Jennifer asked as she put her hand on his shoulder. When Steve turned to look at her, he saw that she had the most sincere look on her face.
"Yeah, I'm fine. How could I not be when I am with the most beautiful angel on this earth." Steve said as he looked into Jennifer's eyes. He felt at ease when he looked into those eyes. Jennifer got a sheepish grin on her face. She was beaming with pride from Steve's compliment.
With that said, the group headed to T.C. in Todd's car. Todd drove and Julie sat up front with him. Steve and Jennifer sat in back, holding each other's hands. It was a quiet drive into T.C., which was up to about a mile from town. All of a sudden, something big and black darted out from the trees and ran across in front of the car. Todd slammed on his brakes and tried not to skid into the trees along side of the road. The car did a fish tail and came to a stop, less than a few feet from a tree.
"Is everyone okay?" Steve asked when the car came to a stop.
"We're fine up here. How are you guys back there?" Todd responded for himself and Julie.
"We're okay, right Jennifer?" Steve said and turned to look at Jennifer. She was as white as a ghost and was trembling like a leaf blowing in a strong wind. She just looked at him, unable to speak.
"What's wrong?" Steve started to ask and then saw what was causing her such distress. The tree that they almost hit was right in her passenger window. What was more disturbing than that was the huge claw marks on the tree.
"What the hell was that?" Todd said as he climbed out of the car.
"I'm not sure but it appeared very big. You didn't hit it, did you?" Steve asked.
"No I don't think so. Let me check. Nope, no damage up here." Todd said over his shoulder to Steve.
After checking to make sure everything was okay, they were off again towards Traverse City. Todd kept a sharp eye out for anything else that might jump out at them. They arrived at Blossoms without any more problems. They got a table and proceeded to order breakfast, seeing as how it was now two-thirty in the morning.
"Man, I still don't know what the hell that thing was that ran across in front of us." Todd said in between mouthfuls of food.
"Yeah, I have no clue either." Steve said as he drank some of his pop. His mind had been racing overtime ever since the incident. Steve sat there remembering what his parents had been working on when they disappeared and he got completely white.
"Steve, what's wrong?" Jennifer asked with concern in her voice. She noticed that Steve was completely white and shaking like crazy.
"Geez, Steve." Todd said. "Let's take him outside and get some fresh air."
Todd and Jennifer got Steve between them and carried him outside. With the fresh air hitting his face, Steve started to get his normal coloring back.
"Are you alright, Steve?" Julie asked as she exited the restaurant and saw them sitting on the curb.
"Yeah, I'll be fine." Steve said as he took in more fresh air. "I just don't know what happened." Steve stated even as he knew he was lying through his teeth. He knew exactly what had happened but he refused to let himself believe it.
"Well, I think that is enough excitement for one evening. We should be getting the girls home." Todd said as he glanced at his watch.
"Yeah, you're right." Steve said. He stood up and noticed that Jennifer was shivering in the night air. He walked over to her without saying a word and place his jacket on her shoulders. She just grinned up at him and moved in closer to share in his body warmth.
The group started walking back to Todd's car. They had to park far away when they first got there because it was so crowded. Now they were walking were there was little or no lighting and it was very pitch dark. Out of nowhere, two men jumped out from behind a building directly in front of them. They appeared to be extremely burly men in their early to middle thirties. Both had mustaches and bulging muscles. They had on long, black trench coats and hats that covered half their faces in shadow. Then one of them spoke.
"Give us all of your money." He said with a raspy voice. He look very calm even though his partner was glancing around nervously. He was sweating like crazy too.
"What makes you think we'd give you all of our money?" Todd said as he moved Julie behind him and Steve did the same thing with Jennifer.
"This nickel plated revolver says so." The man said with a smirk on his face.
"Oh, well, that's a good point." Todd stated back at the man.
While Todd and the man were exchanging words, Steve was getting this weird feeling, like a million flies swarming around in his head. He gripped his head with his hands and fell to the ground, rocking back and forth.
"What's wrong with him, man?" the man's friend asked, looking somewhat nervous. He was glancing around with a panic expression on his face.
