I work in education and I'm amazed many times at the e-mails that I've received. I've fallen victim to the all capital e-mail from our school's principal which stated, "BE AT THE 4:00 PM MEETING, OR ELSE". We later found out that she was joking, but who knew? Elements of E--mail style says this form of writing indicates shouting, and many of us were offended and upset by this. There was no smiley.

Another example was when a teacher was sending a joke throughout the e-mail sytem. The joke was pretty funny, but it was very unprofessional. They took a big risk, because our e-mail is property of the school district. The book says, "Watch what you say". It is very possible to lose your job for sending jokes through the company e-mail system. Fortunately, this person didn't.

I've also received e-mail with signatures at the bottom that have links to other sites. I don't know if this is okay or not, but sometimes it seems a bit misleading and takes away from the original message. Has that happened to anyone else?

My prinicipal should've added a smiley or the word "joke" to her e-mail.

The teacher who sent the joke throughout the e-mail system should've thought twice.

I'm not sure if it's okay to link others to another site after receiving their message. Seems odd. I think I would steer clear of doing that.
