1.)An e-mail that I thought was between two persons and found that it was being sent to others via carbon copy and blind carbon copy. Good proof of what Ken said about e-mails being proprietary and owned by others - that is it not just your private correspondence when sometimes you may think it is.
2.) Forwarding e-mails with history or attachments so many times and to so many people that the e-mail becomes so large it takes on a life of its own. Our text, The Elements of E-mail Style, tells us to "Edit the original message to include only enough information to remind the sender of his or her original question or purpose. If the original message is long, you can place it below your reply message." We need to watch what is attached when we reply with history, and at some point, just send an original reply.
3.) Sending replies to those "chain e-mails". Our company has a strict policy that we are not to send any e-mail of this type and we are not to respond to them. However, I can't tell you how often I still receive this kind of e-mail, even from supervisors who should know better. I think the best thing is to just delete the e-mail and not reply in my situation. I cannot control the behavior of others, but I can control my reaction to this type of communication.
