Laura walked out to the barn and opened Bet’s stall door. The elegant stallion seemed raring to go as she led him into the aisle. She brushed off his glossy brown coat and combed his silky black mane. “Who’s my big, tough stallion?” Laura cooed, scratching him behind his ears. She bridled him and then led him outside. She glanced at the clock and the thermometer. It was 4:00 a.m. and 31° F. “Brrrrr.” Laura said, zipping up her coat. She stood on the fence and vaulted bareback onto her stallion. Bet snorted eagerly and danced beneath her. Laura squeezed the reins in her gloved fingers and rode towards the heated indoor jumping arena. She rode in and pushed the door shut behind her. “Whew. It is cold out there.” Laura said, snuggling into her jacket. She urged Bet into a trot and started him on a circle. He was eager to get going. Suddenly, the arena door creaked open and Jesse walked in, leading Perfect. “Jesse?” Laura gasped. “Well, I heard you get out of bed and come to the barn. So, I followed you and tacked up to come out here. I figured that you could give me sort of a lesson.” He replied, mounting Perfect with just a little bit of difficulty. “Alright, warm her up by doing some circles.” Laura replied. After about 15 minutes, both horses were warmed up. “Do you want to try something new and a little more exciting?” Laura asked, knowing what he would say. “Yeah!” Jesse responded. “Alright, well pick up sitting trot on that circle.” Laura said, watching his form. “Now, in that corner, I want you to squeeze with your outside leg. Be ready for a little bump and then, you will be cantering.” She continued. Jesse nodded and in the corner he pushed Perfect into a canter. The Austrailian Stock Horse mare launched into a silky smooth, slow canter. Jesse sat in the saddle, clinging to mane. “Alright, Jesse, sit back and move with her. That’s right.” Laura said, proud that her brother had caught on so quickly. “Laura go ahead and do whatever you were going to do. I’ll be fine.” Jesse said, slowing Perfect down to a trot. Laura nodded and moved into a canter, holding a firm contact on Bet’s mouth. The stallion moved almost delicately towards the first jump and leapt easily over it. “Wow!” Jesse murmured, watching the pair take each 5’ fence effortlessly. Laura guided Bet through the rest of the course, smiling brightly as they cleared the last fence with ease. “Good boy,” Laura said, smiling. She and Jesse rode back down to barn, pleased with their ride.
