Date Posted: 15:01:34 12/28/02 Sat I was helping out with barn chores, topping off water buckets, when I heard my adoptive mother, Dana, call "hey Andrew, come here, I've got something for you!" I turned off the hose & yelled "coming Dana," trotting out of the barn.My mom was standing by the horse trailer which was attatched to her truck."I just got home & I have a suprise for you, just hold on a sec. while I get it." Dana said.She walked to her truck & opened the truck door, rummaging inside & coming out with a bag from the tack store."Hold this while I get this new horse I brought home out, would ya?" I nodded, & Dana handed me the bag.She walked over to the back of the trailer & opened the trailer door.It was dark inside the trailer, & I couldn't see the horse she was bringing out.A few seconds later, Dana walked out with the lead of a beautiful bay horse in her hand."This is Risque, a TB mare" she told me.I nodded."Now look at your suprise." I looked into the bag.Inside, was a set of 4 hunter green leg wraps, 2 black bell boots, & a leather halter."Thanks Dana," I said "I'll go put them in the tack room quick." Dana said quickly "now hold on a sec. there, thats not all of your suprise, follow me, she said, leading Risque." I followed her into the mares barn & watched as Dana put Risque in her new stall."Now close your eyes," she said.I sighed & said "c'mon, do I have to?" Dana smiled & said "yes." I closed me eyes, & Dana spun me around a few times."Now open your eyes," she said.I was looking right at Risque's new stall."Where's my suprise?" I asked."Your looking at it," Dana said."You mean that Risque is...mine?!" Dana nodded."She's awesome, Dana! Thank you!" "Your welcome.But right now, it would be a good idea to get her a flake of hay & to fill up her water bucket.After that, meet me in the barn office so I can tell you a bit more about her.Do you mind doing that? It would give you a bit of a chance to get to know her." Dana said.I nodded & jogged off to get a couple of flakes of hay from the hay stall in the barn.I gave Risque her hay, then quickly filled up her water bucket.I spent a few minutes petting Risque's nose & talking to her quietly, telling her "its okay girl, your ok," trying to calm down the pretty mare.After a few mintues, I patted her on the nose once more, then walked over to the barn office.Dana was inside, looking over some papers at her desk.on the other side of the desk, a chair was pulled up.There were many ribbons & medals hanging on the wall from horse shows that Dana had won in.There was also a big leather couch, a large bookshelf, holding tons of books about horses, a little coffee table, with horse magazines scattered around on it, a filing cabinet, & there was a big plant in the corner of the room right next to the filing cabinet."Oh, hey Andrew, I was just looking over Risque's papers, sir down somewhere." Dana said.I walked over to the chair, grabbed some various papers that were on the chair, set them on Dana's already messy desk & sat down in the chair."So what did you want to tell me?" I asked Dana."I just wanted to tell you more about her." I nodded."Risque is already registered with the Jockey Club, & has been through an inspection.I've got a some papers that tell her scores here along with a little medal & a ribbon from the inspection.I've also got her registration papers here, & some ribbons from shows that she has won, along with a show record & her coggins test, which is negative of course.Have a look." Dana said.She pushed some ribbons & papers towards me.I picked up the registration papers.Her sire was a Thoroughbred named Risky Business & her dam was a Thoroughbred named Jezebel who's dam was a Secretariat mare.I looked over the rest of her papers.Risque had done well at her inspection, with a high scoring on temperment.I looked at her ribbons for a little while.Dana told me "She's only 4 years old, & was started a little late on her training, so she's only trotting groundpoles right now, but she does free-jump & seems to really like it.She's a serious showjumping, dressage or eventing prospect.I thought she was perfect for you." After looking at her various ribbons, I told Dana "I've got to get back to watering the geldings now.Then I'm going to spend some time with Risque & groom her for a little while, ok?" Dana said "go right ahead, I have a few more things to do in the office before I get to riding some horses." I nodded & got up, heading out the door to go water in the geldings barn... A few days later... "I'm going to ride you today girl," I said to Risque, as I groomed her in the crossties.Risque had quickly settled down into her new home & today I was going to ride her.Risque enjoyed being brushed & relaxed as I groomed her.Then I tacked her up with a close contact saddle & a snaffle bit bridle.Risque had good ground manners & didn't try to bite when I tightened her girth.She accepted the bit of the bridle easily & followed me obediently as I led her to a indoor flat arena.Dana was already in the arena, walking a pretty, 3 y/o Hanoverian filly named Ebony Pride.Dana waved when she saw me.I waved back.Risque was a little nervous about being in the arena, but stood still as I mounted her.I grabbed a bit more rein & squeezed Risque with my legs, getting her to walk on.Risque pranced about nervously.I sponged on the reins to get her to settle down some.After walking Risque for a little while, I tried trotting & cantering her.The Thoroughbred mare performed perfectly, even though she got on the wrong lead a couple of times.After walking her around for a little while, I dismounted.There wasn't much I could do with her today, as she was still getting used to Timeless Farm.I led Risque back to her stall & untacked her.After giving her a quick grooming, I put her blanket back on & fed her a carrot.Risque was very good today, so she deserved the treat.Then I went to put away my tack...
